The Edgar Wallace Beer Festival
October 2009

Hello, and welcome to our latest beer festival.

I was getting fed up doing seasonal-themed festivals and tried to find another reason to gather a load of different ales together in my cellar. We found a tenuous link between The War of the Roses and Temple Gardens.

Shakespeare wrote in "Henry VI Part 1" that Plantagenet asked his supporters to pluck a white rose from the briar in Temple Gardens to show their allegiance whereas Somerset says those who support him in his dispute with Plantagenet should pluck a red rose.

PLANTAGENET

Let him that is a true-born gentleman And stands upon the honour of his birth, If he suppose that I have pleaded truth, From off this brier pluck a white rose with me.

SOMERSET

Let him that is no coward nor no flatterer, But dare maintain the party of the truth, Pluck a red rose from off this thorn with me.

Therefore the ales are all from breweries in Yorkshire and Lancashire (I know the series of battles know known as The War of the Roses was fought between The House of York and The House of Lancaster and not the actual counties of Yorkshire and Lancashire, but this is a beer festival, not a history lesson!)

The list is subject to the usual conditions, beer actually delivered, beer in good nick, possible substitutions and secret extras. Please enjoy your beer in a responsible manner.
